Regardless of what online game you serve, scaling will be critical if you are at all successful. While creating the killer game is first priority, not far behind is making sure your success won’t kill you.
To engineer great systems on a budget we have to master the art of system integration and code re-use. By combining open source and middleware solutions a company can derive infrastructure to meet a games needs in months instead of years.
Starting out with requirement and a handful of researched solutions is a good start, but how much of the solution do you need when? Solid system engineering will help you find the bottlenecks and may dictate one solution, but budgets that scale with userbase may dictate another. We have to calculate the risks of associated with matching milestone deliverables to ramp up time to give minimum effort, but still keep the business smooth.
Integration and customization can be expensive, time consuming and sometime unpredictable. We explore how to minimize risk while creating custom software from parts by applying successful refactoring patterns, process and testing.
